It may become infected when you least expect it—due to deep decay or injury. When this happens, you might notice sensitivity to heat, cold, or pressure, often accompanied by significant pain. And let’s face it—no one needs that kind of discomfort.
Interestingly, not all infections are immediately obvious. In some cases, only an X-ray can reveal a problem, which is why regular dental check-ups are so important. Similarly, if a tooth experiences trauma or injury, it’s always wise to have it examined promptly.
When a tooth becomes infected, the nerve inside may die, leading to an abscess. Left untreated, this infection can spread and even damage the surrounding jawbone.

THE GOOD NEWS: ROOT CANAL THERAPY CAN HELP
Teeth that once would have been extracted can now often be saved through root canal therapy (RCT). This procedure treats the inside of the tooth by removing infection and restoring its function. After treatment, the tooth can continue to serve you just like a natural, healthy tooth.
Because treated teeth can become more fragile, a crown is usually recommended afterward. A crown provides full 360-degree protection, restoring strength and preventing fractures during normal chewing.

WHY SAVE YOUR NATURAL TOOTH?
Root canal treatment, even when combined with a crown, is often more cost-effective than removing a tooth and replacing it with a bridge or implant. More importantly, nothing truly replaces your natural tooth—preserving it is always the best option when possible.

MANAGING DISCOMFORT AFTER TREATMENT
It’s important to begin pain management before the numbness from anesthesia wears off.
For Moderate Pain:

Take 1 tablet of Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 500 mg

Combine with Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) 400 mg

Repeat every 4–6 hours as needed
(Note: Ibuprofen is commonly available in 200 mg tablets—take 2–3 tablets per dose.)

For Severe Pain:

Take 2 tablets of Extra Strength Acetaminophen (500 mg each)

Combine with Ibuprofen 600 mg

Repeat every 6–8 hours as needed

Or take prescribed medication as directed

Important: Do not take these medications if you are allergic or have been advised by your physician to avoid them.

TAKEAWAY
Root canal therapy is a safe, effective way to relieve pain, eliminate infection, and preserve your natural tooth. With proper care and restoration, your treated tooth can last for many years—keeping your smile healthy and strong.

Jeff Velasquez, DDS
541 W. While traditional partials often rely on a metal framework, a modern and increasingly popular alternative is the Valplast Partial Denture. In this article, we'll explore what makes Valplast unique, who can benefit from it, and how to keep it in top condition.

What is a Valplast Partial Denture?

Valplast is a type of partial denture made from a flexible, thermoplastic nylon resin. Unlike conventional partials that use a rigid metal framework, Valplast is known for its incredible flexibility and durability. This material is biocompatible and virtually unbreakable under normal use, making it a comfortable and long-lasting choice. The denture base itself is translucent, allowing the natural gum tissue color to show through, making it a highly aesthetic option.

Who is the Best Candidate for Valplast?

Valplast is an excellent option for a wide range of patients, particularly those who:

Are missing one or more teeth and want a metal-free solution. The absence of a metal framework makes it a great choice for patients with metal allergies or those who simply prefer a more natural-looking appliance.

Have a history of breaking traditional acrylic dentures. The flexible nature of Valplast makes it incredibly resistant to fracture.

Desire a highly aesthetic and discreet appliance. The translucent material blends seamlessly with the natural gum tissue, making the denture virtually unnoticeable.

Have sensitive gums or bony areas. The flexible base conforms to the contours of the mouth, reducing the pressure points often associated with rigid dentures.

However, Valplast may not be the ideal choice for everyone. Patients with a very large number of missing teeth or those who need a denture to support an existing bridge may be better suited for a traditional partial denture with a metal framework. Your dentist will be able to assess your specific needs and recommend the best treatment option.

The Advantages of Valplast

Superior Aesthetics: The metal-free, translucent design provides a more natural and discreet appearance.

Exceptional Comfort: The flexible and lightweight material adapts to the mouth's anatomy, reducing irritation and discomfort.

Remarkable Durability: Valplast is incredibly strong and resistant to breaking, offering a long-lasting solution.

Biocompatible: The nylon resin is hypoallergenic and free of metal, making it an excellent option for patients with sensitivities.

No Clumsy Clasps: The flexible clasps are an integral part of the denture and blend seamlessly with the gums, eliminating the need for visible metal clasps.

The Disadvantages of Valplast

Not Relineable: Unlike acrylic dentures, Valplast cannot be relined or easily repaired if the fit changes over time.

Can be more difficult to clean: The flexible nature and porosity of the material can make it more prone to plaque and stain buildup if not cleaned properly.

Not ideal for all situations: As mentioned earlier, it may not be suitable for patients with extensive tooth loss or complex bite issues.

Keeping Your Valplast Denture in Top Shape

Proper care is essential to maintain the longevity and appearance of your Valplast partial. Here are some key tips:

Brush Daily: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner (specifically designed for dentures) or mild soap. Avoid using regular toothpaste, as it can be too abrasive and scratch the surface.

Soak it Regularly: Soak your denture in a specialized denture-cleansing solution or a Valplast-approved cleaner at least once a day. This helps to remove bacteria and stains.

Handle with Care: While Valplast is durable, it can still be damaged if dropped. Always handle it over a towel or basin of water.

Avoid Hot Water: Never use hot or boiling water to clean or store your denture, as this can warp the material.

Schedule Regular Dental Check-ups: Regular visits to your dentist are crucial to ensure your denture continues to fit well and that your oral health is maintained.

Valplast partial dentures offer a comfortable, aesthetic, and durable alternative to traditional metal-based dentures.
