Studies have shown that parents can't detect BAD Breath on their children. But others like their teachers, dentists, relatives & friends can. As adults, we are usually aware if we have halitosis. Children on the other hand, will have difficulty noticing it on their own (unless other kids are making fun of them because of it).
There are three main causes of bad breath. The first one is plaque. This is the soft white stuff that you can see near the gum line when your child is not brushing. Plaque can become the tartar if its left alone and not cleaned out for several days and also it can initiate softening of the enamel that leads to a cavity. The second cause of bad breath is dry mouth. Dry mouth in children is usually a cause of an underlying medical problem, allergies, medication and mouth breathing. And the last but not the least cause of bad breath is DIET. Talk about eating garlic breads and onions on their sandwiches, of course that's obvious cause. What to do: We can pay close attention to their brushing habits and oral hygiene. As parents, we need to supervise and ensure that they're doing a better job in their brushing & flossing technique in addition to rinsing their mouth after snacking. Developing this habits in them can help maintain an excellent oral health, preventing bad breath and even cavities. And regular dental visits is necessary.
